Confession: A new Target opened up in my area and I’ve been there at least three times last week. Obsessed doesn’t even begin to describe my love for Target. Especially their Threshold line of products, which is evident after cleaning up the messy that was my desk.
Anywho, while walking through the dollar section, I saw a measuring tape key chain. I thought what a great thing to have in case you have to measure something in a pinch. Then the wheels started turning. Why not create a small travel pouch with measuring necessities when out shopping?!? Keep everything already packed and just grab and go when you go out searching for the perfectly sized basket. Duh.
So I bought a bunch of those tape measures (One for my travels, one for my desk, and one for my mother in law). I searched around my apartment for what I had on hand – a small makeup case, small notebook, calculator, small pencil from IKEA and their paper tape measure as well. Can never have enough of those.
I guess I could fold up pictures of my inspiration, but that’s what Pinterest is for right? I can also use my phone to take pictures of items I’m not sure about. Sometimes I take pictures of items then bring it back home and hold up my phone to their possible location and try to picture it there.
My makeup case was the perfect size to hold everything in it with plenty of room left over. I even have little dividers to organize my things even more. Maybe a small wallet and my keys and phone if I don’t want to carry my big bag.
Great, huh? Am I the only one who hasn’t thought of this yet? It’s like a light bulb went off and I feel silly for not thinking of this sooner.
Something has seriously been bugging me. It’s at work. I take pride in my organizational skills in my classroom. Veteran teachers like to come in and get organizing ideas. I’ll share them with you one day. But there’s one area that has been driving me crazy. It’s my desk. Well, the drawers, not the desktop.
This is what it looks like….(as I hide my head in shame)
It was absolutely terrible! I couldn’t find anything I needed. My paras take things out (which I don’t mind at all), but when it comes time to put things back, it’s not where they got it from. I’ve had enough. So I took everything out of all three drawers. It always gets worse before it gets better.
What I should have done is taken a picture of the drawers emptied out and everything laid out all over. But I didn’t. Bad blogger. I guess I was really eager to put everything back. Here is what it looks like now:
I feel like I can breathe again. I now can find what I’m looking for. That bottom drawer isn’t perfect just yet, but I’m ok with it for now. The important thing is that I’m not afraid to open the drawers. Especially that top one. Hope it lasts. If it doesn’t, then I’ll just figure out another system that can work better.
So I’ve had this post as a draft since before we moved and when I finally came back to finish it, I had to rewrite most of it. Anywho, back when I was trying to organize and pack, I decided I should probably organize my craft drawers. Just so I know what I get to keep and what should go to storage. And you know what?!? I was able to keep everything! With the right storage solutions and little bit of problem solving, I organized all of my craft supplies to fit two drawers.
Warning, there will be an overload of pictures. Let’s start with what I was working with:
This is the after:
I’ll start from left to right. The box on the left has all of my cutting tools (scissors, fancy scissors, hole punches,etc) and my glues. The majority of my glues are smaller tubes so I put them all in a pencil case to keep them corralled. The middle box contains my paint brushes and foam brushes. Michael’s had an AWESOME sale on foam brushes. 25 brushes for 50 cents! So of course I bought two packs. Finally, the box on the right is full of pencil cases of pens, markers, highlighters, colored pencils, pencils, Sharpie markers, etc.
The next drawer is my favorite drawer. Can you guess why?

Yes, those are my craft paints. I lined them up upside down so I can see the colors I have. Then I used a tension rod to keep them still, so they won’t fall over. I think you can see it in the picture below.
Behind the paints I have my pile of scrapbook papers and other miscellaneous craft items (Modge Podge, crayons, embellishments).
So those are my craft drawers nicely organized. I’m so happy I was able to fit everything.
So how do you organize your craft supplies?
Since I am now off from work for the next three weeks, I have more time to really get down and pack everything up for our move at the end of the month. The first thing was to organize the storage unit….again. I moved to the new unit during that terrible heat wave in July, so hubs and I just threw the boxes in there and left. I decided to organize when the temperature’s cooled down a bit.
Well that time has come last weekend and told myself that the storage unit isn’t going to organize itself. So off I went to organize. It didn’t take long at all. Maybe 90 minutes tops.
Now I can continue to put more stuff in and start packing things up. And the countdown begins til move in day.
